Background must be evenly lit

Any shadows on the screen will make it difficult to key out.

Ideally the subject needs to be as far away as possible from the background, this will help to eliminate ‘green spill’ (reflected green light on subject)

The subject should lit separately to control exposure and direction of light source.

Have awareness of different types of lighting in a wide variety of films.


This tutorial was a good introduction to green screen in a studio, having said that I would liked to have gone at faster pace. I had already covered basic lighting setups in year one. I do appreciated that the pace of the lesson is governed by the ability of the class.

Part B – Manolo Lonzo

Types of Lenses

Photography & Cinema lenses

The main difference is that the photography lenses have f-stops and are various sizes whereas the cinema lenses have t-stops and are the same circumference.

Tips & considerations

Keep the depth of field consistent on both side.

Keep the head room and eye levels similar

Do don’t break the 180 degree rule.

Be aware of distortion and disorientation

Keep an eye on continuity and reference lines
